Making the most of the Easter holidays...
There is a definite feel of spring in the air, daffodils are out and the sun is shining, in between the showers!
Easter is almost upon us, and traditionally it’s the time that people start doing more outside.
Spring is one of the best times for walking – the spring flowers are always a delight, and the fresh green of the new leaves brings joy to your heart. It’s not too hot, the days are getting longer and the ground is drying up, so now is the time to get your boots on and start exploring.
The Easter holidays are the perfect time to enjoy the fabulous British springtime. Of course the weather isn’t always perfect.
What to do if... it's raining
Don’t worry, this is the perfect time for you to start doing some planning for your next long distance walk. Which walk to choose?
It’s always a tricky choice – there are so many fabulous ones, each are very special in different ways. If you are looking to really get away from it all and find your inner peace Glyndwr’s Way could be the one for you. Or if you prefer the camaraderie of fellow walkers how about the Cotswold Way or the South Downs Way? Maybe you don’t have very long, so fancy one of the shorter trails, the stunning Yorkshire Wolds Way could be perfect. Or if you are planning a long break there’s always the South West Coast Path. If you have trouble choosing our National Trails and Scotland’s Great Trails posters are a good place to start.

Don’t hang about – get out there! Give your mental health a boost and make the most of any spring sunshine. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy a daffodil walk - find one near you in our daffodil blog.
Why not try a new walk – there are lots of fabulous short walks to enjoy, even in areas you know well there will probably be routes you haven’t tried. We have an excellent selection of pocket-sized short walk books. Even better, lots of the walks end at a cosy pub or a friendly tea shop.

What to do if... if you want to try something different
Easter is the time when sponsored events really start to get going. This year could be the year you get involved!
There are lots to choose from – here are a few options:
- Walk 2 miles with your dog every day in April to support Stand up to Cancer.
- Do a Big Hike for Cancer Research UK - from the Jurassic Coast to Loch Lomond, there are several events to choose from.
- Become a Mighty Hiker in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Be prepared for the challenge
What to do if... if the kids are bored
Plan an Easter treasure hunt! It’s the perfect way to get the kids out of the house having fun.
- Work out the area your hunt is going to cover – this will help the participants from straying too far! You could limit it to your house or garden or a local park or through your local neighbourhood.
- Pick your clue locations.
- Decide if the prizes will be found at the clue locations (perfect if your hunt is in your own garden – not so good if you are in a park – someone else might find them first! Also, please remember that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, so keep eggs out of the reach of any inquisitive hounds) or whether the prizes will be awarded at the end.
- Write your clues – use rhymes or riddles to describe the location, create an anagram of the location name, or do a quick sketch drawing of the location, take a photo of part of the location (eg if the location is a sign, photograph a (recognisable!) corner or part of it.
- Enjoy the hunt!
The prize doesn’t have to be chocolate (although we do love Easter Eggs!), we have a range of inexpensive items that would make perfect prizes.
