About Offa's Dyke Path

Offa’s Dyke Path travels through the borderlands of England and Wales for 177 miles (285 km) and offers something for everyone.

Offa’s Dyke Path was opened in the summer of 1971, and links Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow on the banks of the Severn estuary with the coastal town of Prestatyn. While walking Offa’s Dyke Path you will view stunning landscapes, from the riverside meadows of the Wye and Severn valleys to the peaceful rolling hills of Shropshire and Powys and the dramatic heather-clad uplands of the Black Mountains and the Clwydian Range / Dee Valley.

The Path passes through or near many historic towns, including Chepstow, Monmouth, Hay-on-Wye, Kington, Presteigne, Knighton, Bishop’s Castle, Montgomery, Welshpool, Oswestry, Llangollen, Mold, Ruthin, Denbigh, and Prestatyn.

Along the way, you will discover majestic castles, quiet country churches, enigmatic Iron Age hillforts and enticing country pubs. And, of course, the Trail frequently follows the impressive Offa’s Dyke itself. This amazing hand-dug bank and ditch were built in the 8th century by the command of King Offa of the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. It was probably intended to divide Mercia from rival kingdoms in what is now Wales, and some sections still form the England/Wales border today.

How long does walking Offa's Dyke Path take, end to end?

It takes about two weeks to complete the whole Trail. Many people choose to complete only short sections in day trips or to finish walking Offa’s Dyke Path over many weeks, months or years.

Is walking Offa's Dyke Path hard?

The Trail passes through many different types of landscape. The toughest part is probably the switchback section of the Shropshire Hills between Knighton and Brompton Crossroads and it can also be hard going in the upland stretches in the Brecon Beacons and Clwydian Range, especially in poor weather or visibility. The flattest stretch is the section between Buttington Bridge and Llanymynech which largely follows the River Severn and the Montgomeryshire Canal. Elsewhere it is largely gentle ups and downs. If you walk Offa’s Dyke Path from south to north there are about 28,000 feet of elevation, which is the same as the height of Everest.

Which direction should I walk Offa's Dyke Path in?

The guide books are generally written from Sedbury Cliffs in the south to Prestatyn in the north and this is the direction most people walk the Trail in but there is nothing to stop you from going the other way. The majority of guidebooks are written south to north but the Trailblazer book does include route descriptions for both directions.

Who can enjoy Walking Offa's Dyke Path?

While the Trail is primarily for walkers, some sections are bridleways that can be ridden or cycled, although these sections are fragmented.

Can I bring my dog while walking Offa's Dyke Path?

Your dog is welcome on Offa's Dyke Path but be aware that there are stiles where dogs may need to be lifted over. Some of the Trail passes through farmland where stock may be grazing so please respect farmers and their animals by keeping your dog on a lead when near livestock. Cows with calves are very protective and can be aggressive towards dogs, so if you encounter any aggression, release your dog, do not try to pick it up.

What is the best time of year for walking Offa's Dyke Path?

Walking Offa’s Dyke Path can be done right through the year so there is not really a best time. Most people enjoy walking the National Trail between April and October, although spring and early summer are the best times to see the flora along the way.

However, keep in mind the Welsh climate, which can see rain at any time, and the fact that some accommodation is closed in the winter. Therefore, it is important to carry appropriate clothing and remember that there is limited daylight in the winter.
