Let's Walk the Yorkshire Coast

The Yorkshire Coast’s infinite variety is the core of its beauty; its glorious sandy beaches have been a favourite destination for holidaymakers since the Victorian period.

Published in June 2019 this new book by Stephen I. Robinson explores the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast which stretches between Saltburn and Scalby Mills near Scarborough, a distance of 36 miles (58km). Besides the stunning coastline, the routes also provide an opportunity to visit some of the beautiful villages and other attractions lying further inland.

All the walks follow circular routes ranging from 6 to 8¾ miles (9.65 to 14.08km). Each walk begins from a car park where one is available, or at a place where it is possible to park safely without obstructing gateways or causing inconvenience to others, where possible alternative routes have been included, enabling the walks to be shortened.

The maps have been checked for accuracy by the North York Moors National Park. They include the most recent diversions and footpath changes, which are not shown on the current Ordnance Survey Maps. All the routes were surveyed between January and March 2019, and any diverted paths were resurveyed in May 2019 before going to press.

Each route has two pages of background information, which cover the heritage and culture of the various places visited. These pages also reveal some of the features and items of interest seen along the way. Further information is included in a Miscellanea at the rear of the book, which explains some of the mysterious tales and famous people associated with the area.
