Nidderdale Way - Zigzag map - The Trails Shop
This Zigzag map covers the Nidderdale Way.
The Nidderdale Way is a celebrated circular walking route that explores the dramatic landscapes and charming villages of the Nidderdale National Landscape (formerly AONB) in North Yorkshire. Stretching approximately 53 miles, the route begins and ends in Pateley Bridge, taking walkers on a varied journey through lush river valleys, upland moors, and scenic farmland. Key highlights include walking alongside the River Nidd, with its peaceful stretches and steep wooded banks, and passing through attractive villages like Lofthouse, Ramsgill, and Bewerley. The path also offers panoramic views of iconic landmarks such as Gouthwaite Reservoir and Brimham Rocks, a dramatic natural rock formation managed by the National Trust.
Along the route, walkers encounter historical and cultural features that add richness to the experience. The remnants of old lead mines, stone barns, and ancient dry stone walls tell of the dale's agricultural and industrial past. The area offers a strong sense of rural heritage and natural tranquillity. With varied terrain and multiple access points, the Nidderdale Way is suitable for both long-distance walkers and those seeking shorter scenic sections. It’s a rewarding route for anyone looking to explore a lesser-known but spectacular part of the Yorkshire countryside.
What is different about a Zigzag map?
The main difference is the scale – although these maps use the ever-popular Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale mapping they show this mapping at a larger scale – 1:20,000. This makes them easier to use for everyone.
They are laminated, so you can use them in the wet without fear of them disintegrating.
As their name suggests, Zigzag maps come in a concertina strip format and with 200cm of mapping, they can follow a long distance footpath at a scale of 1:20,000 for up to 30 miles (depending on the wiggles).
The maps are made for convenience; you need only unfold 2 panels at a time and then keep on flipping over to follow the path. Zigzag is laminated for weatherproofing and will still fit a pocket when folded.
Maps come with a useful scale ruler.
