Cycling King Alfred's Way - a piece of cake?
What do you know about King Alfred? I bet it has something to do with cakes. But did you know that there is a 217 miles / 350km circular off-road cycle route named after him that tours southern England taking in Wantage (his birthplace) and Winchester (his final resting place). The route connects many sites of great significance in our history including Stonehenge, Avebury stone circle, Iron Age hill forts, Farnham Castle, and Winchester and Salisbury Cathedrals.
Created by Cycling UK in 2020, King Alfred's Way connects to four National Trails, the South Downs Way, North Downs Way, Thames Path and The Ridgeway.
This honest and humorous book tells the story of Julia Goodfellow-Smith (who six weeks before she set off was a non-cyclist!) and her friend Alison's adventure on this wonderful trail. It's the perfect read if you are wondering what to add to, or tick off next, on your bucket list.
